These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. No two students are the same, as each loves to read a different genre. In this inclusive classroom, content is presented through interdisciplinary learning, project-based learning, whole group and small group instruction. Our school is heavily driven by data and student growth, so watching my students’ progress in reading and writing throughout the school year is extremely rewarding. Based on a true story, A Long Walk to Water portrays the stories of Salva Dut, a boy from Sudan, as he journeys throughout the continent of Africa, fighting tragedy, drought, hunger, and war. Salva's experiences are paired with a story about a girl in Sudan, also facing many struggles. Their stories are compared and contrasted throughout the course of the text. A Long Walk to Water not only highlights two individuals' tragic experiences, but also examines invention, innovation, determination, and the power to overcome adversity. This novel is a true story about hope, faith, and perseverance. A Long Walk to Water exposes the geography, religion, poverty, culture of a different region of the world and conveys grade appropriate themes, science and technology. Salva's story pairs with other text sets, including fiction and nonfiction, to expose students to varied mix of genres. Additionally, I plan to pair this text with Refugee by Alan Gratz.
