Our students come from socioeconomically strapped, poverty-stricken homes, and they often need basic needs from the schools. All of the students get free breakfast and lunch at school. Many kids are from single parent homes or have grandparents who have taken the burden of raising them. Many live in apartment buildings and do not have opportunities to clean up their own lawns or gardens. Students try to overcome the daily drama of everyday life by escaping to school. Some of my toughest students enjoy getting involved and getting their hands dirty. Seeing the results is the reward for all of us. We have some really great kids who want to make a difference. My students need Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and brooms to keep our school clean and gardening tools to take pride in the landscaping at our school. I feel this project will help students understand life skills of cleaning, gardening, and community service which they may not get the chance to experience due to their home environments.
