"The One and Only Ivan" will inspire students to empathize what life is like from a captive gorilla's point of view. Through their application of literature, they will feel their heart strings tug at the realization that animals are not so different than humans, all need love and companions. Students will feel they have a voice in their future, as well as a choice. The book, "Because of Mr. Terupt," takes students into a typical classroom where the characters represent the classmates sitting next to them. By understanding that everyone brings a backstory and different strengths, students begin to make informed decisions about how first impressions can be changed and how tragedy can create lasting friendships. From these book studies, the children will choose an enrichment project that reflects their understanding and application of the literature that will be shared and presented school-wide and in the community. These projects might include: raising money to adopt an endangered animal from the World Wildlife Fund, or creating leadership opportunities with younger students by mentoring them in acceptance and forgiveness. Taking the time to work beyond the words will give the children an opportunity to excel, no matter what level of understanding they come to my class with at the beginning of the year.
