The Lego Story Starter kit will allow students at every ability level to have access to the literacy curriculum. This means that students at different levels of reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking will be able to study the core content of fourth grade. Lego kits provide a concrete bridge for comprehending and writing about ideas that are becoming more abstract. The Story Starter curriculum will allow students to work in teams and to use technology to understand ideas and express their thinking. These skills are needed in math and science as well as literacy, and will be useful to them as they pursue their college and career goals. As well as providing multiple points of access to the literacy curriculum, the Lego Story Starter set will be a highly engaging medium for my students. My students come from homes with limited economic resources. A set of Legos to create and express their ideas with would be an opportunity that they would not otherwise have. They are already passionate about the graphic novel genre. The Story Starter curriculum would be used by students to storyboard fiction and nonfiction narratives.
