  • Keep Our Second Grade Students Warm

    Funded Dec 19, 2021

Today's weather is below 0. Yesterday we were able to provide all students who did not have proper cold weather gear with a hat and gloves. Additonally we have many extras as they get lost or need to be replaced.

Imagine a 7 or 8 year old's face when they are told they get to keep basic necessities that so many take for granted. They were so excited to pick their favorite color hat and then match or mismatch gloves to go along with them.

Your generosity allowed so many students to be just like their friends with hats and gloves. Some selflessly asked if they could have some for a sibling too. By having a stockpile of hats and gloves, we will not have to worry about keeping our kiddos warm for some quite a while.

Coming to school warm is something we all take for granted. You have helped many children gain this basic need. Thanks for from bottom of our hearts, to the tips of our warm fingers, and the top of our cozy heads.

Thank your from our second grade students our my second grade team!!!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Page

  • Decodable Readers

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Your gift has allowed children who once thought they could not read to have a newfound confidence. My students are able to pick up a book and read independently. What is even better is that the books all look the same so whether a student is reading a CVC book or a book with multisyllables, they have no idea.

My students now beg to read, both by themselves and with their groups. We use these books for group instructions, and then the students ask to reread previously read books to improve their fluency and expression.

This gift is changing the lives of my students.”

  • Embracing the Science of Reading

    Funded Jul 18, 2021

You are helping me, and my teammates, become better. We are using, and discussing, everything we learn in these books.

My students are already benefitting from our learning. We have gotten back to the basics and the kids are actually reading!!!They are so excited when they can decode and encode text.

The sky is the limit, and hopefully these books will guide others. We are creating a professional library at my school so that all can change their ways. You all are amazing for supporting not only our kiddos, but also us teachers. We could not do it without you!!!”

  • Help Me Digitize Learning for ALL Students!

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Wow, I could not have done it without you! Your generosity allowed me to seemlessly transition to online learning. I was the in person teacher, however our whole district was shut down in October. I was able to purchase online materials for reading, writing, phonics, math, and fun activities.

My students were totally engaged while using the Boom cards that I purchased from Teacher Pay Teachers. They had no idea they were learning, assessing, and reinforcing skills. Best part is that it also allowed me to collect data to see who needed differentiating. They loved the graphics and different ways of responding online(way outside my expertise). I never would have been able to create so many materials while teaching remotely.

They next steps for myself is to address potential learning loss and lack of early direct reading instruction. I have immersed myself in the Science of Reading to learn how to better implement a structured reading program. I hope to create a project that will provide decodeable readers for all my students.”

  • Learn Where You Learn Best

    Funded Oct 5, 2019

This white board easel allowed me to turn my home into a classroom. With covid, I had to grab as many supplies as I could and adapt, just like them.

When we went in person, my students were socially distanced, which means some were at the very back of my class. With the easel, I was able to literally roll the lessons around the classroom so all could see up close.

Many of my students have just the basics at home. To see/use wobble seats and the easel, brings a new excitement to learning. They are engaged, ask to see things up close and best of all are learning!!!”

  • Growing Together

    Funded Nov 16, 2018

Having a carpet has allowed all students to have their own space and learn in a comfortable environment. The wobble seats allow those who need a little extra sensory output and opportunity to fidget while still attending to lessons.

When the children first saw our new seating, they cautiously approached and asked if it was okay to sit on. It was like Christmas as very little in our classroom is "brand new".

Having this expanded, comfortable seating will allow kids to stretch out when learning. To lie down and fall into a good book, and just plain play on the floor.

    Thank your for your generosity.”

  • Love of Reading!

    Funded Jul 19, 2018

First of all thank you so much for your generous donation. Here at the Reilly School we use Guided Reading to instruct our students. Guided Reading provides students the opportunity to read a variety of books at their instructional level. Currently my class is made up of students from level E(kindergarten) to level P and everything in between. As you can imagine this requires a ton of books. Higher level students are describing character traits, making inferences, and identifying the theme of a story. Students who struggle are identifying basic story elements such as characters, setting and plot.

Many of my students have never held a brand new book in their hands. The excitement of being the first one in the pages helps build the interest in the books. Due to your generosity I was able to purchase books to use both in small group and for the children to choose to read independently. They also love borrowing books because they do not have any at home.

Our second language learners are especially excited with the new books because this gives them so many new books to explore. On the other hand, my higher level students are loving reading Stone Fox, a classic that takes them into the wild and the past. We explore what life was like back them and then they will put themselves in Little Willy's shoes. Again thank you and we greatly appreciate your generosity.”

  • Technology, We Need It!

    Funded Mar 16, 2018

Where do I begin? When you are being raised in a technological world yet don't have technology at your fingertips how do you compete? The addition of these chromebooks has allowed my students to be like their older siblings. We were able to connect via Google drive and my students are now sharing their writing at a rate that I can hardly keep up with. Every child was able to research a historical figure and we had a Wax Museum to celebrate all their hard work. Imagine being a child of 8 and 9 and being transformed into a person from the American Revolution. Molly Pitcher, Paul Revere and John Hamilton taught other students about their life. Then we tackled human rights. Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Abraham Lincoln continued to educate their classmates about why they were important to fighting for equal rights. Some inventors like Eli Whitney, Thomas Edison, and Benjamin Franklin shared how their inventions are still important today. You put the world of knowledge at their fingertips and for that their are no words strong enough to thank you. A new class will experience your generosity this year. Oh and by the way the most rewarding moment for me was telling my students that complete strangers cared about them enough to buy those computer for them. To know that someone believes in you is priceless. With love from room 303.”

    Ms. Page

  • Creating Authors

    Funded Dec 17, 2015

Having a print system in our classroom has opened many doors for my class. We have many second language students who often do not have the vocabulary to understand what we are reading or talking about. Now in seconds I can print a picture for them to add to their vocabulary books. Additionally I have been able to make centers to reinforce individual skills. Recently each student wrote a report about an animal they had researched. The printer allowed them to print out their reports and pictures to accompany each book. The felt like authors!

The day we received our Donors choose package was like Christmas morning. The students could not believe that complete strangers cared about them. The kept asking "but why?" What an amazing lesson on random acts of kindness. Any visitors to our classroom are immediately shown our publishing center. A center that is very child accessible and found right next to our classroom library. As soon as they hear the printing start, one is sure to jump out of their seat to check out a classmate's work. Children of all skill levels feel equally proud of their classmates publishing.

We have just started our Fairy Tales unit and each will have an opportunity to write and illustrate their very own Fairy Tale. I cannot wait to see their stories come to life. Without your help, the students would not be as engaged and invested in their writing. Thank you for caring about us!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Page

  • Listen To Joys Of Reading

    Funded Sep 17, 2014

Getting new classroom supplies is always like Christmas morning, however getting tools they have never seen before is priceless. A wireless listening system frees up the need for wires and truly allow the children a chance to share a story. Limited outlets creates challenges, as all technology end up in one corner of the room. A wireless system allows me to place the headphones in a fun area where they can get into their books.

Currently the listening center and accompanying books are getting great use from my newcomer students. They children have been in the country less than a year and don't have the vocabulary to comprehend stories at the same rate as my other students. Additionally my non readers are accessing it. The listening center allows them to hear a story multiple times and to pause when necessary. They have become pros and are completely independent on it, which for them is an accomplishment as well.

The enthusiasm the children have using the listening center is great. They cannot wait to read a new book. As a result of them able to hear a story over and over, we have been able to get them to write about the stories as well. This week the children enjoyed reading "Corduroy" a classic that is covered in many kindergarten and pre k classes. They also were able to work on our class skill on character traits and discuss the ones Corduroy displayed. They feel successful and have been talking about the book all week, even during free time. This week I plan on having some students struggling with fluency record themselves so they can listen and try to improve.

The donation to many classrooms by Google Cambridge will make a tremendous difference in so many children's lives. Your donation allows me to focus on my many different levels of learning and continue to offer engaging activities while children have fun with learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Page

My classroom is quite eclectic. We have many children who do not have English as their home language and have very little early school experience. My class this year will have 22 students, 8 of whom speak a second language at home. I am also the special education class this year and will have several students on Individual Education Plans. My school has worked very hard to overcome many challenges and has become a very positive place to learn and work. It is a large school stretched to the limit. There are 25 classrooms from k-4, 3 substantially separate special education classrooms, and 2 classes to support newcomer students. We offer tutoring as an intervention, however, it is never enough.
