With these supplies, I would like to start a gamified classroom. Last school year, after discovering John Meehan on Twitter, and adapting some of his ideas for my last unit, students consistently said that they enjoyed coming to my class even more. After reading Michael Matera's fantastic book "Explore Like A Pirate" and John Meehan's "EDrenaline Rush", I was even more convinced that this is the right choice.
With these materials, I would like to change the game (pun intended) in my classroom and send my students on a yearlong adventure. Students will receive item cards that will need to be laminated and kept in trading card sleeves. With these cards, my students will become Jedi Knights trying to save the galaxy, have special powers, and defeat various bosses (assignments) earning experience points (XP). Reviews and quizzes will be supported with turn-based games like Jishaku, Pop Up Pirate, and 5 Minute Dungeon and become boss battles; novel studies will become engaging classroom adventures where students re-build events out of building blocks (LEGO bricks); texts and stories will be re-told with the help of Story Cubes or become video messages sent from different planets by recording in front of a green screen. With the diffuser, each unit will be accompanied by smells unique to each environment. Additionally, headphones will be used to let students watch video content and work at their own pace.
All of this will create an immersive experience that students will talk about for a very long time. And to quote Mr. Meehan: "They say that your favorite class is the one you like the most. Your best class is the one in which you learn the most. I want my class to be both of those things. Every. Single. Day.
