As an educator in a Title 1 school, I have the privilege of affecting students in so many ways. My school serves a population of which 78% receive free or reduced lunch; this rate is the highest in my county. My first grade students often come to school in need of much more than a teacher. Quite frequently, I serve as a parent, counselor, nurse, etc. Many of our students are forced to face the challenges that go along with multigenerational poverty, absent parents, and undereducated guardians. In order to improve the odds of my students' chances to achieve great things, a STEM centered curriculum is imperative. When students are actively participating in activities that relate to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math they learn skills that they can apply to real world applications and prepare them for meaningful employment in the workplace, all of which will help them in beating the odds they face.
