My students come from a very low socioeconomic area; most of them come from immigrant families, so they will be the first generation to go on to college. A lot also come from large, single parent homes where money is tight, so affording things like tutoring or supplemental material to help them succeed in an Advanced Placement class is simply out of the question. My students are so motivated; they want so badly to go on to college--and they have all the abilities to do so--but they feel discouraged sometimes when they don't have the extra material that students from neighboring districts can easily afford.
