My students are from a small close knit community in the rural Appalachian heart of Jackson County, Ky where over 30% of families are considered below the poverty level. A large number of my students are part of the Head Start program which provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. Our program consists of children ages 3 to 5 years old. Children that do not qualify for the Head Start portion of Preschool may enroll starting at age 3 if they have some type of disability such as cognitive, motor, social-emotional, self- help skills, or a speech impairment.
