This project will engage the 5th graders at our school in an immersive project that involves their classroom teachers, their art teacher, and of course, their music teacher. Our goal is for every 5th grader to leave our school with their very own ukulele. They are already learning to play the ukulele in the classroom setting, but they can't practice at home unless they have a ukulele. Putting together these ukulele kits will involve careful planning, and we intend to apply the students in that process. Each student will maintain a blog about their ukulele project. They will research different types of glue and ukulele kits. They will read reviews and instructions. They will write about what problems they might face and how to overcome them. They will talk with the art teacher about how to paint the ukuleles. What types of paint will work and why. What parts should be painted before assembly and why? They will also study the science of ukuleles—acoustics, vibration, sound waves, engineering, woodworking, etc. We intend for this to be an interdisciplinary project that engages students in every subject of learning.
