My kindergarten students are second language learners who struggle to communicate in a language different than they hear at home. They are "at risk" learners being economically disadvantaged in a Title I, Inner City school district with a strong desire to read. Our school is in the process of applying to be an International Baccalaureate World School and is in need of basic classroom technology. My students represent many cultures. Many are bussed to the school from their ethnic neighborhoods. They lack literacy at home and struggle each day to improve their reading readiness skills. They love books and beg for me to "read another story, please". With wireless headphones they can expand and extend their time listening to their favorite stories over and over again without distractions. My goal is to encourage them to love books for the love of reading. Reading is their way out of poverty and their path to learning as educated citizens.
