Bountiful Books!
Funded May 12, 2022Thank you so much for the bountiful books that have recently entered my classroom! My students' reactions to the books were excitement over the influx of choices for reading. These books have been used for a variety of students across multiple ages, all of whom have hearing loss. The books have helped my students become stronger readers, learn new vocabulary, and build their comprehension skills. Included in the materials were leveled readers and books about characters with hearing loss or other challenges to inspire.”

Funded May 5, 2022Self advocacy and peer understanding of hearing aids are so important for students who are hard of hearing, and the materials from this project really helped my students in those areas. The bone conduction headphones had a unanimous reaction from both adults and students, that it was extremely cool and helpful in understanding how bone anchored hearing aids work. Teachers and peers in my students' classrooms each got a chance to listen with the bone conduction headphones, as hearing through bone conduction was explained. My students also then had a chance to show off their hearing aids. We also read "The Adventures of Billie BAHA and Her Super HEARo Friends!" which is an empowering story of the strengths and superpowers of multiple characters who use various hearing aids. Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and students!”

Funded Apr 7, 2022"El Deafo Superpowered" by Cece Bell is a memoir in graphic novel form where the author relates what it was like growing up with a hearing loss, navigating friendships, listening challenges, and using assistive technology. My students all have a hearing loss and face the same challenges Cece did. We discuss connections to Cece, challenges they face, and how my students respond in similar situations. My students all loved the ending when Cece used her hearing technology to help her classmates, and is hailed a hero. Thanks to your generous donations, my students now have their own copy of "El Deafo Superpowered'' to reread to their heart's content.
The next step for my students is to take the lessons learned from the story, and use it to advance their self-advocacy skills. After learning how Cece finally opens up about her hearing loss and becomes a class hero, it is now my students turn to speak up about their hearing loss. We completed a self advocacy project about my students' hearing loss and devices that explains their hearing loss and ways to make the classroom more auditory friendly. This project was made complete with report covers.”

Funded Sep 16, 2020This school year started with many unknowns, and thanks to your help my students have been able to have a smooth transition in light of changing learning models. While I ended up working fully remotely, some of my students have faced switching between blended learning, fully remote, and fully in person learning. No matter the setting, our sessions remained consistent.
I polled my students before sending them their materials, and they unanimously agreed that they preferred to read hard copy books rather than reading on a computer screen. The books were distributed to my student's homes, and they were surprised and delighted to receive their materials and to see what I look like in person (albeit with a mask and at a distance).
The main book that my students and I read this year was "El Deafo" by Cece Bell. This is a memoir in graphic novel form, where the author relates what it was like growing up with a hearing loss, navigating friendships, listening challenges, and using assistive technology. My students all have a hearing loss and face the same challenges Cece did. We discuss connections to Cece, challenges they face, and how my students respond in similar situations. My students all loved the ending when Cece used her hearing technology to help her classmates, and is hailed a hero.
The next step for my students is to take the lessons learned from the stories they read, and use it to advance their self-advocacy skills. After learning how Cece finally opens up about her hearing loss and becomes a class hero, it is now my students turn to speak up about their hearing loss.
So while there are still plenty of unknowns as to how the rest of the school year will look, my students having consistent hard copy materials have been a help to all.”
