Shake, Rattle, and Roll
Funded Jan 29, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation! I was so excited to have my students use these in their exploration of how natural disasters affect Utah residents and the architecture of buildings. After learning about how earthquakes are generated and the type of waves that are created by earthquakes, I challenged my students to create a 3 story structure that could withstand an earthquake.
When I brought these out for students to use to construct their buildings, they were so excited! They couldn't wait to run their buildings through the extreme earthquake waves (body and surface waves). I then challenged them to watch what happens to a "person," which was a bouncy ball, in a building during an earthquake. It was interesting for them to see how a person is thrown all over during an earthquake. It helped them to realize why we practice earthquake drills.
I think that next year, I will incorporate a CER: claim, evidence and reasoning paragraph with this assignment. It will be a way for me to assess what students have learned from this activity.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Utah State Board of Education.Chromebook Mini Lab
Funded May 25, 2014My students have been so excited this year to use Chromebooks in my classroom. When they have access to the Chromebooks for an assignment, they are much more willing to complete the work and stay engaged in the process. The Chromebooks have allowed my students to collaborate on group projects using Ted Ed, research information for writing and social studies projects, and discover excellent websites with extension activities for current curriculum. It is vital they learn appropriate ways to search for credible resources and effectively use the technology available, and Chromebooks make this possible!
With consistent access to this technology, I have been able to broaden my teaching curriculum with extra resources. The use of technology in learning about space and space exploration is essential. It has also increased my ability to keep my students engaged in what they are learning as we search the world for information. My students are used to having technology at their fingertips and it is nice to utilize those skills in the classroom!”

Mrs. Antares
