My students struggle with reading and therefore struggle with writing. They come into the classroom ready to argue their way out of an assignment and I have heard some GREAT arguments! They are surprised when I tell them we will be reading every day in class. I receive groans and heckling, but ultimately I win them over. I read WITH THEM and this is always a shock. Then I challenge them. I will read ____ number of books or _____ number of pages. I will tell you in detail what I liked, what I didn't and so forth. Can you do the same? As a teacher I need to capitalize on what will motivate THEM and make them love reading and the arts.
Even the most defiant and uninterested student comes alive when they have a chance to do something that matters to them.
