Appreciating Students to Improve Academics
Funded Dec 14, 2023My seniors used these resources in order to graduate. We went from a possible 49% graduation rate to a 74% graduation rate. It was a massive improvement and a large part of it was due to all these donations that went directly to our students.
The teacher support and these incentives combined motivated my students to keep pushing themselves. The students met during their lunch periods and also after school in order to make up work. This donation went towards supplying them food, gift cards, pens, and various school supplies. Some students met daily but all students met monthly for our meetings. The students were excited and appreciative to be given all these donations.
We recently had graduation, and so many of them continued to thank us all for their support. I truly appreciate everyone who donated to our children. We saw a massive improvement and I will be forever grateful.”

Funded Mar 3, 2023Thank you so much for your support. Our students had so much fun and truly grew as leaders. We employed the new resources by organizing a school-wide event, fostering student collaboration in problem-solving across various activities. This fun-filled day aimed to enhance their problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership skills, crucial for success in computer science courses.
When the materials first arrived, the students exhibited great enthusiasm. They appreciated the opportunity to showcase their skills in a non-traditional setting, allowing for a more personalized expression. The event enabled them to break out of their comfort zones and engage in an exciting experience.
Building on the support from our generous donors, we aspire to transform this initiative into an annual tradition. Looking ahead, we plan to propose another project for the upcoming school year, emphasizing kinesthetic activities and small group work, which have proven to be highly beneficial for our students. I want to thank our donors again for their generous donations!”

iPad Keyboards Needed for Our Scholars to Learn Remotely!
Funded Dec 1, 2020First thank you all very much for your generous donation! This year has been tough for so many families. My students come from a very poor district in the south bronx where they may not have the same type of technology accessible to them as other students. In September, when this pandemic started students were allowed to come in person or stay at home to complete their work. Many stayed at home waiting to receive an IPAD from the government. Some also came into school for us to teach in person. These students are the students who showed me first hand how hard it was to use the iPad for all of their school work. If the student was lucky enough to have an iPad, yes some were still waiting for one, they unfortunately had no keyboards. So when I went to discipline one of my students for not doing his work, he said "Miss, it would take me an hour to write a paragraph on this Ipad so I just can't keep up with my work". It was this student and others in that class that motivated me to write this grant. It was also those students who were some of the first to receive a keyboard from your generous donations. So I genuinely mean it when I say- YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THESE STUDENTS LIVES! For one, they were grateful and super excited to receive the keyboards. But it helped them complete their classwork in a more efficient way and therefore they had a better chance of keeping up with, and passing, their classes.
The most exciting thing about the keyboards were that the students finally were able to actually type at a decent rate. They also felt grateful since they were the ones who asked for the keyboards and then were actually able to get them! I truly appreciate each and everyone of you that took money out of your own pockets for my students during this pandemic. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!”

Funded Aug 27, 2013My students loved the resources they received! They are able to actually participate in more interactive labs, which included sound, since they have those new headphones! They are able to watch brain pop videos and khan academy lessons at their own pace. This allows students to feel challenged and engaged because they can constantly move to another level of the lab without being distracted or "held back" by students who don't get the material as quickly. It also allows students who struggle to review lessons and play them back so they can more thoroughly understand the information. The headphones allowed them to be completed zoned into the work they are doing...you could see that they were enjoying the learning process.
At the same time, students have become more engaged in the hands-on labs. We are able to go outside and test the weather with our new barometer. And the students are more enthusiastic about reading the geologic time scale tables by comparing the actual fossils to the ones we are studying. It's materials like these that help keep students more motivated; It's not the skills that inner city students lack, it's the motivation. If we can motivate these students then they can accomplish anything! Thank you for your time and generosity. It is all very appreciated.”

Murals to Illustrate Crew Pride
Funded Dec 22, 2010I want to thank you for your generosity. My students have enjoyed using all of the materials. They have been working hard on their murals. The students enjoyed it and learned team building skills that they wouldn't have had the opportunity to complete without you.
As in a lot of schools during this economic recession, it is difficult to receive funding for supplies. As well, in an underprivileged and low poverty school, the students sometimes have trouble motivating themselves to complete all of the work. But because of your generosity, the kids were able to receive a lot of more hands-on lessons which kept their focus.
Overall, thank you for everything. I wish there were more people who spent their money on the less fortunate. These kids enjoyed your generosity and I want to truly thank you for that.
Sincerely,
Tara”

Funded Dec 11, 2010I want to thank you for your generosity. My students have enjoyed using all of the materials. We had a horrible ice storm today, yet all the teachers were amazed that I had almost full attendance. This was because my students knew they were dissecting frogs and they were really excited about it. My students said they were never able to dissect anything before; so not only was it an engaging lesson but also informative. I asked them what they had learned and they describe where organs were located, they discussed how they can visualize the organs and recognize them better, and they also added how they learned names of the organs and tools that were studied. Thanks to you, my students enjoyed a more enriched curriculum since they were able to do an actual lab where they felt like scientists for once.

Funded Sep 2, 2010I want to thank you for your generosity. My students have enjoyed using all of the materials. They have just finished their lab reports, whereas without the supplies you donated, this would not be possible. As well, the students enjoyed a more enriched curriculum since they were able to do a lot of more labs where they could visualize and practice what they were learning.

Clay for Hands On Experience
Funded Feb 9, 2010Thank you very much for all of the clay and mineral samples. My 10th grade students had a blast! As they learned about topographic maps, they were able to build clay mountains; cut out each contour line on the mountains; and later draw a topographic map of that particular clay mountain. This was crucial to their learning since most students have trouble imagining a 3-D landform on a 2-D map. They also used this clay as references to actual mountains when they had to draw their own topographic maps. From a teacher's perspective this clay was great because it is reusable for the years to come.
Secondly, the box of minerals was great. The students started to use them when they did a "gallery walk" around the room. They found a lot of the minerals interesting and asked questions such as "where did this come from" and "how did it get this color". It was a great way to get them excited about learning about minerals. Later they identified and classified the minerals by using charts and tables for assistance. Because of your donations I was able to make the class more exiting through hands-on experiences. Therefore, thanks again for your generosity. The kids and I really appreciate it. ”

Funded Apr 2, 2009Thank you very much for your generosity. Working in an underprivileged/ low income school has been difficult for many reasons. One important reason is that it is harder to get the students motivated. They have a lot of bad influences so they find it harder to focus on what they should do in school and for school when they are outside of school. The hard part about the initial situation was that I was given the living environment class the second semester of my first year teaching due to conflicts with the last teacher and the students. When I first started teaching it, I was nervous because I had never taught it before, and all of the students didn't seem excited about it. As soon as I suggested one day that we dissect pigs, I caught all of my student's attention and they seemed super excited. So I took the chance and wrote to donors choose and was overwhelmed with excitement when I was funded. Of course, I told my students that we had been funded and they were so excited and seemed to ask me every other day if the pigs had arrived yet. When the pigs arrived the students completed a series of lessons and then enjoyed dissecting the pigs as we discussed the various organs. Some students emitted they wanted to be doctors and asked me questions about EVERY part of the pig (which was great). Other students said "ewww" but took part in the lesson and enjoyed the hands on experience. To them it was fun and exciting, and they barely realized that they learned a whole bunch of things about anatomy as well. Overall, I want to thank you because this was a memorable experience for my students. They will always remember dissecting pigs and now they will know the intestines, livers, kidneys, etc and even be able to say they held those and cut those open to look inside them. It was a great lesson and my students and I are so appreciative of the generosity from all of you. Thanks, Tara ”
