About 6 months ago, our students successfully raised enough funds to have the beginning elements of a lacrosse team at our small high school. Our school is in the heart of East San Jose. As a college prep school, the academics-driven curriculum does not provide appropriate resources for extracurricular activities. For that reason, my students must advocate for the teams and clubs that they want to see on campus.
Lacrosse has had the ability to bring our students together and create a sense of community and focus. One of my students, Andrew, took the lead in developing a proposal for a lacrosse team and why he felt that having this team would benefit our school. Below are some of his words:
"After looking into many different ideas (including football), I found that Lacrosse would be a good fit for my school and the eastside San Jose community. The equipment is minimal compared to other potential sports and after playing for a year, I know the power that it has to bring people together. Within 2 days of gauging interest in the sport, I had more than enough willing participants signed up for a team."
After a successful DonorsChoose campaign to receive shoulder pads for our team, we are hoping to obtain a necessary (and more expensive) component of our team--helmets! Having these necessary helmets to begin this team will greatly benefit student empowerment on campus and our school community. Thank you!
