Have you ever read a book that allowed you into a world you never knew existed? The book "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischman does just that. I've seen students who hate to read volunteer to read out loud with this book! This story allows many of my struggling readers to get involved because the story line is mature enough for 8th graders to feel like they aren't being babied, all while allowing some of my struggling readers to comprehend the vocabulary easily. Beyond the scope of Virginia SOLs, this story speaks of how a diverse community is brought together through an unexpected way, a garden.
Students in my school would benefit from reading a story exposing them to awareness of stereotypes of certain cultures and religions, and allow them to see the characters for who they really are instead of what they look like.
I've taught this novel in my former school district and when I knew my current school didn't have a copy, I had to find a way to get a set! However, I don't have the $200 to make this happen. Will you please help fund this purchase so these books can be loved year after year in Amherst Middle School?
