This year has been tough and I’m looking to transform my room into an interactive and relaxing space to support students' needs (physical and mental). My first goal is to restock our hygiene closet with items to fulfill their basic needs (snacks, hygiene supplies, and basic school supplies). Some of my students do not have access to all the items they need to be successful. I want to make sure they have a place where they can visit and get what they need. No one should be embarrassed, hungry, or feel ashamed to come to school due to personal circumstances. My second goal is to create an environment where students have access to tools to improve their mental health and manage their stress. I want my room to be a sanctuary for anyone in need. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for teens and coping with stress does not come naturally for most people. I would like to turn my classroom into a safe space where students can unwind and learn techniques to cope with their various emotions. Items on my list are to help turn my classroom into a relaxing spa environment. The pandemic reinforced that students cannot learn unless they’re healthy. Mental health issues have increased due to COVID and many families are feeling financially strained. This year it will be extra important to have a well-stocked hygiene closet and space for students to unwind. School and life have not been normal. I want them to come to school and have a space they can call home.
