During our chemistry periodic table unit, the electron configuration of elements and ions is studied. This is possible because of the modern quantum mechanical model of an atom. We look at the colors of metal salts when burned in methanol and apply these to fireworks. Further, using diffraction grating glasses, my students could see how electrons of pure gases get excited when energized by electricity to jump to higher energy levels and subsequently release this energy in visible light colors as electrons return to ground state. We also sorely need new safety goggles and more NaOH. Thank you!
