The majority of my students come from very low-income backgrounds. Most of them come to school hungry because they didn't have any food in the house for breakfast. I make sure to keep a stash of cereal and snacks in my closet for severe cases! I have 14 first graders and each of them is different in their own way. This is my first year teaching in a low-income school and I've learned a lot from my students. They thrive off of receiving love and praise, something some of them lack at home. My students are extremely social. I find myself rewarding them with "talking breaks" if they complete classwork on time and quietly! They are also very active and love any activity where they can get out of their seats or compete against their classmates. I have a few students with below-level skills who struggle on a daily basis, especially in reading.
