My inner city students are eager, energetic people hoping to succeed in a world where they are underrepresented in the STEM fields. We explore Life Science, Physical Science and the Social Sciences through multiple media -- texts, experiments, art, movies, projects, and computer science in our classroom. Our goal is to prepare our learners to be productive and informed citizens in the 21st Century.
We seek some resources that would enhance the curriculum and expedite our progress toward the goal -- namely, novel sets that could be studied in a thematic context. We plan to supplement classroom nonfiction libraries with classroom sets of these 3 texts in particular: "The Alchemist", by Paul Coelho (8th grade), "The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whittaker", by Cynthia DeFelice (7th grade), and "Uprising", by Margaret Peterson Haddix (both grade levels).
