I teach a wonderful group of self-motivated, hard-working, fifth grade students from very low-income families, and for whom English is not their first language. We are a class of multi-ethnic and multi-lingual learners. We often use team-based learning to promote cooperation and the exchange of knowledge. Our lack of computers has hindered my students' ability to learn necessary keyboarding and research skills, create collaborative projects, and explore much needed on-line tutorials to supplement their classroom learning. We are an inner city, urban, public elementary school located in Boston's Chinatown. We serve students from Asian, Hispanic, Somalian, and other diverse backgrounds, Most are English language learners. Approximately 80% of our students are low income and do not have regular access to technology. My goal is to have our students become technologically competent so that they can be competitive when they enter middle school, and not lag behind more privileged peers.
