  • The Home-School Team: An Emphasis on Parent Involvement

    Funded Aug 25, 2010

Thank you for believing in the power of parental involvement in our schools. Together we really can make a difference. Your support will empower the parents of our classroom to take a more active role in their child's education. For this, words cannot express the gratitude I feel for your generosity. Thank you for your support of such an important project. Please know that each of you is greatly appreciated and cherished by both teachers as well as by students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chapman

  • Math + Literature = Success

    Funded Aug 12, 2010

Thank you for believing in my project. Your support will help to enable cross-curricular learning experiences in my classroom. Students will be able to learn mathematics objectives while being exposed to truly wonderful pieces of literature. Reading and math are such important aspects of learning and through the funding of this project, they will strengthen their learning in both areas. Please know that through the funding of this project my students will also learn the true meaning of kindness and generosity. Your support to us lets them know that they are not forgotten and that there are many people (who they do not even know) that want for them to succeed. That in itself is powerful.”

  • Learning for Life with a Classroom Economy

    Funded Apr 16, 2010

Thank you for believing in the power of my project. It is donors like you who continue to inspire educators to go above and beyond to enrich the lives of our students, like through the creation of a classroom economy. Your generosity made this possible. This project has helped us in so many ways.

Behavior has improved in my classroom. Students love to earn money, go shopping, and work for salaries. The cashier is a popular job now that we have a real working cash register!! They know that unless they are good and honest citizens, they cannot do this.

Their life skills have benefited from this project. Students have an understanding of how an economy works, how to save their money, how to pay taxes, and how to work to earn paychecks. These are skills that they will carry with them well beyond elementary school.

I cannot thank you enough for your contribution to this project. Please know that it is greatly appreciated and has positively impacted the lives of each and every one of my students.”

  • "Ms. C, With These Black and White Copies I Can Hardly See!"

    Funded Dec 29, 2009

With the recent budget cuts, ink has become pretty much non-existent. Color copying has been completely eliminated, and black and white copying greatly reduced. Because of the funding of this project, I have been able to provide color copies to my students. How has this benefited them? Words cannot even begin to express the ease at which students read and analyze maps, charts, etc. as well as analyzing the purpose of photographs and pictures that accompany stories and/or articles. These are vital skills that have greatly increased in the short time that I have been able to provide these color copies to my students. Please know that you have positively impacted each and every one of my students with your donation.

    Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chapman

This classroom project was brought to life by HP and National Lab Day and one other donor.
  • Fabulous, Fun Ways to become Fluent Readers

    Funded Nov 17, 2009

Thank you for believing in the power of literacy. Through your contributions to the funding of this project, two groups of under-performing and at-risk students had made tremendous strides in increasing their oral reading fluency. The materials have been used to create a series of fun learning activities like "Brain Break Reading" in which students are given one minute (using our student timers) to read grade level appropriate sight words to their partner. This is just one example of a great number of activities meant to target this literacy skill that we have used in the classroom. Through their implementation, recognizable and significant gains have been made. Students are motivated to continue to increase their fluency and in turn their literacy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in my students as I do.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chapman

  • I'm Through, What Can I Do?

    Funded May 20, 2009

Through the funding of the "I'm through what can I do?" project, my students have each been provided with an individualized skill practice folder based on their specific areas of need. This folder has not only provided me with additional information as to their understanding and proficiency of these skills, but has also become part of our daily routine as a way for early finishers to make the best use of their time as they can. Students enjoy working in their folders, and I enjoy seeing students hard at work even after they have finished. Thank you so much for providing us with the supplies needed to put these folders into use in our classroom.”

  • Flip the Script: Making Reading Fun for Struggling Readers

    Funded Sep 17, 2009

Words cannot express the excitement that the materials purchased with your donation have brought to the students in my reading classroom. My students find reading to be a burden and a struggle. This project has helped them to see that it can be fun. They have thoroughly enjoyed "taking the stage" for Reader's Theatre and practicing all week to prepare for their big performance. We use our reading and decoding skills to help navigate through the script which at first seemed overwhelming. What they soon realized is that they CAN read the script with practice and application of the strategies we have worked so hard to learn in class. Not only can they read the script, but they can perform it. I cannot wait to show them via video just how far they have come through the year with their Reader's Theatre and more specifically, their reading, Thank you so much for helping to make reading fun for my struggling readers.”

  • STAR Books: Students Taking Academic Responsibility

    Funded Feb 9, 2009

I once again find myself amazed at the thoughtfulness and generosity of strangers. I have wanted all year to implement a binder organization system in my classroom, but unfortunately it was not within the financial means of our school, community, or myself. You all have made my vision come to life and have helped me to teach my students organizational skills that are going to be vital to their success next year in middle school.

The students in my class take pride in their STAR binders and have learned not only how to organize the color coded components, but also how to care for it and treat it as a learning tool. I have high expectations of my students for maintenance of these binders, and my students have really stepped up to the plate. I am REALLY proud of how well they are doing keeping up with the binder system.

Teachers in my district receive bad financial news almost daily. Programs are being cut, positions are left unfilled, subs are almost non-existent, and the future of our schools overall looks so unclear. Knowing that we--the tiny community that I call my classroom--have the support of people like you helps to give me clarity that I can continue to pursue my passion for enriching the education of my students. It is truly appreciated and I do not think I can possibly thank you enough for not only your financial support, but also for inspiring me to continue doing what I love to do.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chapman

  • Readers and Leaders!

    Funded Feb 11, 2009

The goal of this project was to inspire my students to become stronger readers and also leaders. Through the course of the past two months that we have had our donated supplies, I have watched not only their reading comprehension and fluency skills strengthen, but also a newfound confidence in reading. With the help of the whisper phones, the students have learned how to self-correct while reading. Their fluency has increased tremendously. The comprehension bookmarks have helped them to monitor their comprehension while reading. They have now mastered the biography series on CD that you purchased for us; not only did they learn about some wonderful historical figures from reading, they learned to use listening skills as a powerful tool to strengthen their own reading. They also were able to share these wonderful books with younger students at our school which strengthened their leadership qualities.

As a reading teacher to students who have struggled to pass our state assessment, it often seems like an overwhelming task to bring these students up to grade level. Many are reading at the second and third grade level. I am inspired to never give up on these children and to use my creativity and desire to see these students succeed thanks to generous donors like you both. Without your assistance, I would have never been able to provide these additional resources to my students. These supplies have enriched my students' learning in ways that I couldn't have even imagined. For that I am extremely thankful to you and to the Donor's Choose organization.

Please know that your gratitude is greatly appreciated.”

  • We've Got Learning in Our Pocket!

    Funded Dec 11, 2008

Imagine my surprise when just barely before my project was due to expire, I received an e-mail letting me know that my project, "We've Got Learning in Our Pocket," had been fully funded. Words cannot describe my excitement and gratitude.

I cannot thank my donors enough for believing in my classroom and wanting to make a difference in the lives of my students. In a district plagued by seemingly never-ending budget cuts, the responsibility for providing the extra tools and and supplies for use in the classroom falls in the hands of the teacher. I am so thankful for organizations such as DonorsChoose.org and donors like you for helping to provide teachers with the materials we need to meet the individual needs of our students and to help them succeed beyond their greatest potential. Thank you again for choosing to fund my project and thank you for giving me students the opportunity to see that we all--even strangers--want more than anything to see them succeed.

    Sincerely,

    Lindse”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chapman

My classroom of special education and low performing students is located in one of the largest school districts in the country. It is also one of the districts hardest hit by recent budget cuts and the poor economy. We are located in a very low income school with the vast majority (over 97%) of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. I teach Reading and Language Arts to a group of students who in the time of high-stakes testing have increasingly felt the pressure to perform despite economic hardships, learning and/or other disabilities, and previous difficulties and set-backs in the area of Reading. It is my job and mission to help these students succeed and know that despite any obstace, they can overcome and achieve.
