These tables will not only be safer and more functional in my classroom, but they will provide my students with a sense of team work. I strive to encourage my students to participate in group work, collaboration, and communication with their peers. Having tables in the classroom instead of individual desks allows me to enhance those skills. When students use individual desks it can create a sense of isolation and distance from their classmates. With tables students are able to interact easier with one another, as well as, gain a sense of responsibility and ownership. Instead of students working alone, they now can become a part of a team. With these tables my students will also earn “table jobs.” Each student will have a specific duty to carry out each week to ensure their table team stays clean, functioning, and cohesive. I want my students to embrace being a part of a team and take pride in working together to create, problem solve, and make mistakes. These tables will not only serve as a student work space, but will also become a student’s safe space.
