  • Listening to Learn

    Funded Sep 22, 2022

The headphones that were donated to my class made huge differences for multiple classes of students. Students were able to listen to books and improve their reading fluency and expression. For students learning English for the first time, these headphones were so helpful in helping them translate between their native language and learn how to pronounce new words.

Their ability to pair their headphones with school devices has made it easy for them to access tutorials and relearn concepts that were difficult for them. They could also challenge themselves and extend their learning by exploring more about topics.

My sincere thanks for your dedication to the youth of NYC and knowing the importance of our village in helping these students develop into our future leaders.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morales

  • Falling for Books

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

I want to start off by saying thank your for your generous donation. Our classroom library was so limited and out of date; we desperately needed books. Students told me what they would like to read, and now it is bursting with books thanks to you.

One of the major goals I had for my students this year was to increase the volume of books they were reading and I would not have been able to do this work without your help. The books are being read ferociously! Not only are students reading tons of books they are talking about books with one another in a very mature manner. They recommend books to one another and this is also beautiful to see; students so engaged in reading and discussing books.

With these books students have learned many skills as readers. They can now follow characters up and down their story mountain, use and understand figurative language, identify problems and solutions, as well as understand a character's traits based on how they react to problems, they have been able to write about what they are reading and make deep connections. The really amazing thing I see now is that they understand deeply the life lessons to be learned from their books and these are things they will forever be able to refer back to in their lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morales

  • Imagine What You Could Hear

    Funded Aug 30, 2012

Sincere thanks to all who have donated to my project. This listening center has really changed the culture or my classroom. Students have been incredibly happy to use the center to listen to books on tape. They have read through books on tape that seemed interesting, but would have been too challenging for them to read on their own. They have become aware of what reading with expression is, and what it means to be a fluent reader.

Students have become better readers and aware of different cultures through music. Students have listened to music from around the world and been able to make connections and interesting understandings of others.

Sincere thanks to all of your generosity. Without wonderful, caring individuals like yourselves our students in undeserved schools would not be able to receive the quality education that so many others take for granted.”

    With gratitude,

  • Extra! Extra! We Need To Read All About It

    Funded Dec 30, 2011

Thank you to all the generous donors who have helped to open my students minds to the world around them.

I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful it has been to have students immersed in current events. Students are now able to see all of the things that are going on in the world around them.

Having Scholastic News and Time for Kids has opened up the types of discussions about the world and communities that were lacking before such resources. These materials have also helped my students to develop vocabulary skills by introducing them to many new words. They have also been able to use such words in the appropriate context thanks to such wonderful magazines.

My students have grown from ordinary 4th and 5th graders to inquisitive scholars who thirst for knowledge. These news resources have brought the world to life through visual texts and online resources that are provided by the companies. Students can see for themselves what is going on in the worlds and discover what they have been sheltered from.

As you know many public schools are facing severe funding issues and your help has made a world of difference. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart we could not have made this year as interesting and adventurous without your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morales

  • We are writing for the 21st Century!

    Funded Dec 15, 2010

Your generosity has enabled my students to see the writing process come to life. As you can tell by the photos, students are in awe as they see their weeks of hard work come to life in print.

The use of the printer in our classroom has really brought our class into the twenty-first century. Students have printed essays with the ability to move through each step of the writing process independently.

This printer is a wonderful tool for these young scholars.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morales

My students are some of the 1.1 million students who attend public schools in New York City. As in most public schools in urban areas they represent the underprivileged and underrepresented populations in our nation. My students are diligent, creative, enthusiastic learners that attempt to take an active role in their education. They are incredibly mature and amazing when it comes to the talents they have and are able to share with our school. They always put their best foot forward and approach everything they do with a positive attitude. My students attend a pre-k to fifth grade school in which more than 99% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. With that being said it is a quite obvious how valuable every educational opportunity and experience is for them.
