  • Help Student Focus: Noise Cancelling Headphones

    Funded Jul 29, 2024

Thank you so much for making this project possible for my fantastic first grade students! The noise-cancelling headphones are a big hit (they work so well!) In just a few weeks of introducing them in my classroom, I've had students request to use them to help them focus on their work and not get distracted by others. I've even had a student use them in the lunch room (with the high ceilings and acoustics, the volume get very loud!) I'm anticipating them being used a lot this year.

One of the best parts of having a whole class set of the headphones, is that everyone can wear them and it's just another tool that we have available to help us learn. So, if there are particular students who might really benefit from them (due to sensory issues, attention issues, etc.) they don't seem different, because there are other kids in the class wearing them too.

Thank you so much for your generosity! It means so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ferries

  • Building Creativity and Social/Emotional Support Through Play!

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

I can't thank you enough for your support of my project "Building Creativity and Social/Emotional Support Through Play!" We use the tubs at least 4 days a week. And my students absolutely love this time!

Because of social distancing, we can't share tubs this year (although that will provide even more fun and different opportunities to be social, when we can), but that is okay. The students are able to still use it a social time, asking friends to see what they built or created or to ask them to help solve one of the IQ puzzles. The students are still learning and having fun, but these tubs provide them a break from the curriculum and give them a time to interact with their peers - which is much needed at this time in society.

My students and I thank you so much for funding our project. We are grateful every day for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ferries

This classroom project was brought to life by Bill Gates and 3 other donors.
A soft start offers a time to bridge between the whirlwind of arriving at school and the social, mental, and academic demands of the day. This time will give students the opportunity to transition to a school environment and build community with their peers. It offers a time for students to interact with their peers, learn and play, while also completing classroom morning routines (such as putting backpacks away, washing hands, etc.) When thinking about the mental, emotional, and social/emotional states of my students, there is not an equal or balanced starting point. This is the importance of offering choice and space. Soft starts allow students to practice mindfulness and habits of well-being that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
