My Transitional Kindergarten class currently shares our playground with 3 Kindergarten classes and one special education kindergarten class. We have a nice area for tricycles and scooters to be used, but unfortunately, our tricycles are showing the wear and tear from many years of usage. You see, the tricycles were not new when we got them. They were hand-me-downs from my sister’s preschool. Our custodian has done a great job trying to repair them, but with almost 100 students using the bike area every day, the tricycles need to be retired! The “bike yard” is one of the most popular areas of our playground and our students learn how to wait patiently for their turn, share the tricycles with others, and follow the “rules of the road”, all while having fun! Year after year, our students request the same thing: more bikes! new bikes! These tricycles and scooters will help stimulate and connect both sides of the brain to increase brain function and attention. Most of our students do not have the opportunity to ride bicycles at home, and some struggle with balance, coordination and core strength. Studies show the positive effects of physical activity on the health, motor development, and academic performance of young children. Please help us better support the developmental needs of our young students by getting them tricycles to keep them moving, learning and having fun! More tricycles and scooters mean that more children will get moving.
