Reading is a lifelong skill that should be enjoyable, but for some of my fourth graders it simply is not. Many of the students in my school come from homes where literacy is not valued, therefore they have no one at home to model reading to them. Without this modeling, children do not realize the importance of reading, nor do they develop the skills necessary to become good readers.
