I teach a 9th grade English class that is designated as a "resource" class. This means a large percentage of my students are designated as "learning disabled." Many of the 9th grade resource students I teach face a tremendous amount of anxiety and frustration every time they are assigned a reading assignment. A menacing arsenal of unfamiliar vocabulary words leap off the page and words or sometimes even lines seem to blur into each other. For some, since most of their energy is devoted to literally decoding every other word, there is hardly any capacity left to visualize or comprehend what they are reading. This recipe spells disaster unless the teacher is able to "meet them in the middle."
