Students in my Game Art and Design classes design physical card and board games as part of their introduction to game design mechanics and theory. One of the things that surprised me the most was that while many of the students that I teach have strong opinions about games and dreams of being a game designer, their exposure to card games and especially board games is basically zero. I am lucky if students have played Monopoly and Sorry, and on the car game side - War, poker, and usually they don't have that. Exposure to new and contemporary games will inform their work and design throughout my classes. I try very hard to teach students a variety of game mechanics, interesting strategy and interaction etc, but the classroom game collection I have built is mostly from donations/yardsales/and thrift stores, and that pulls from the same demographics. More copies of Sorry, Battleship, and Monopoly don't really help this aim. With these new games, students will play, digest, critique and take notes on mechanics. They will produce physical copies of both card games and board games with digital art packages on computers. Lastly, they will play and critique each other's games. My hope is exposure to a larger variety of contemporary titles will increase the variety and FUN of the games created by my students.
