Studies have shown that until students emotional needs are met, the teacher will not be able to meet their academic needs. Incorporating a daily "Soft Start" morning routine into my schedule will help students be successful by easing into our academic day. When students arrive to school, they will choose from a variety of stem activities. This will allow students to engage in learning, collaborate with one another, and build social skills. Students will rotate through stem stations every morning for 20-30 minutes. Giving students the chance to socialize and engage in hands-on, critical thinking games will set the tone for our school day. Children need time to socialize and engage with their peers just like adults do! Creating a Stem Station in my classroom will allow my students the emotional/social support needed to begin their day. This will improve not only their outlook on school or "morning work," but increase student engagement, and motivate innovative learners. My goal is for students to feel that school is a nurturing, fun place to learn. I feel that incorporating a stem station in my classroom will also improve student behaviors and lessen student interruptions through out the day. Giving students time with their peers every morning will increase focus and minimize distractions during instructional time.
