Often middle school students are not encouraged to utilize manipulatives in the mathematics classroom; however many of my learners need this hands-on experience to develop their understanding of foundational knowledge. With hands-on learning, my students will be able to connect and understand difficult content by utilizing manipulatives. Before students can do operations with rational numbers, they need a contextual understanding of those rational numbers. They need manipulatives to help them visualize parts and wholes and how these ideas develop on number lines. They will be able to visualize fractions and decimals and be able to apply them in a variety of mathematical settings.
