Having access to building materials will give my students a chance to develop their inquiry and collaboration skills as they work together to solve problems, critique designs and work through challenges. Students will utilize materials such as Picasso Tiles, Froogz Toy Constructors, and gears in motion set as they work in small collaborative groups at targeted challenges such as creating items that solve a problem or enhance an idea already in existence. I seek to provide them with an outlet to create, build and inquire. Our students are crew, not passengers, in their learning. Through the use of materials I hope to give them them more opportunities to build resilience, encourage experimentation, and apply knowledge. Items such as the straw builders construction set and creative flakes will allow them more open-ended exploration so that they may build prototypes of inventions we have yet to even dream of in our world today. This type of play is beneficial in getting students to think outside the box so that they can solve the problems of tomorrow. Our school is founded on the expeditionary learning framework which emphasizes the acquisition of skills and knowledge, character and relationship building, as well as producing high quality work. These tools can be a vessel for student to development new learning, work on social skills and produce work that showcases their learning.
