A classroom library that displays a range of different cultures and societal issues helps students to further understand the world around them. Books help us to have difficult conversations and they speak directly to personal experiences that students bring to the classroom. Addressing issues of race, poverty, ability, and others can be difficult. Children's literature helps with addressing those difficult conversations by offering an engaging avenue and depiction into real life situations. When children see themselves and their experiences reflected in the books they read, they gain a sense of value and they begin to feel connected to teachers and other students around them. Culturally reflective books builds on the pedagogy of culturally responsive teaching. These books will help students understand and celebrate what other cultures offer. Children's literature that focuses on culturally relevant issues, encourages students to facilitate their own learning in the areas of equity and inclusion. These books are barrier breakers! By exposing students to culturally reflective books, we help to break down biases and prevent stereotypes. By learning about others, we put a stop a learned hatred and begin the process of positive relationship building one book at a time!
