  • Students Need Pencils

    Funded Dec 1, 2023

This donation is making my classroom run much more smoothly. I no longer have to ration pencils when my students need them. With the pre-sharpened pencils, they no longer have to wait to get started with their classwork because they have to sharpen their pencils. This is a huge help.

Having Kleenex always at the ready is also a real treat. In the past, whenever I ran out of Kleenex and hadn't had a chance to go to the store, students with runny noses would actually have to miss class to go to the restroom. And because my district's new superintendent is terrifying and doesn't like students using the restroom during class, this was particularly unnerving.

Finally, with continually shrinking school budgets, copy paper is often rationed. I like my emergent bilingual students to have paper copies of vocabulary and grammar in front of them, so this is a weight off of my mind.

Your donation is making a difference.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rivlin

  • Practicing Bilingual Literacy With Exciting Romance, Horror, and Soccer Books

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

These books are making all the difference for my students. They are so excited to read now. The Messi and Ronaldo books are super popular with the boys. Everyone loves the horror books, and many of the girls like the romance titles. They also love the Maximilian lucha libre series, which is a perennial favorite, and I finally have enough copies that they don't have to fight over them. The time that they spend reading is crucial for developing reading stamina and fluency. Comparing the English versions with the Spanish versions allows them to develop vocabulary and to notice grammar features that are the same or different in English and Spanish. Thank you so much for your donation!!!”

  • Learning English With Mystery, Romance, Scary, and Soccer Books

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

When I opened the boxes with all the new books, the students jumped out of their seats and gathered round and began picking them off one by one. There are so many new options that they don't even have to argue about who gets which book.

Every day, my students get to choose a book and read for 10 or 15 minutes. It's important that there are many different interesting options for them. Reading a book that they actually like keeps them excited and motivated to read and build their English vocabulary.

They especially love the soccer books and the graphic novels.

Thank you so much for your support!”

  • Learning English and Building Literacy Skills Through Graphic Novels

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

For the first 10 minutes of every class, students can choose any book off of the bookshelf and read it. This choice independent reading is the best way for English learners to pick up new vocabulary. Many of my students never really learned to enjoy reading in their native languages, so having books with pictures (that are not written for little kids) is key to motivating them. The graphic novels that your donation paid for have been very popular. There is one group of boys in particular who are loving the sports-themed books, and whenever they finish one, they go on to the next one. I am really excited to watch them grow and develop as readers. Thank you for giving them that opportunity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rivlin
