I work in a failing school where children come to feel safe, loved and ready to learn. I have a classroom of 23 energetic, funny and creative third graders who try hard to learn. Unfortunately, they are welcomed with chipping paint, broken desks and chairs and a chalkboard! Having little to no materials is very difficult with a group of students that desire a welcoming environment where they feel safe and secure. Home for many of these students is unsafe and unclean. They are crying out for a warm, inviting place to spend most of their day with consistency. They are amazing, resilient students who have had some very difficult experiences in their short time on this earth. It is essential that my classroom becomes that place, a place where my students gather together on the floor and experience a sense of community.
