  • Summer Sensory Extravaganza!

    Funded Jul 5, 2023

It is a pleasure to report to you the success of the project you enabled me to carry out with my class. When the boxes were delivered to my classroom, the students were cheering. Each day, another shipment arrived. When it came, the euphoria was palpable. They were so excited to watch the staff unpack the boxes with new summer sensory items!

For my students, sensory activities are vital to the success of their day. You have enabled them to succeed and thrive! The summer sensory activities in our classroom are now fully stocked, organized and labeled. They cater to my students' different needs. If only you could see my students' faces when they use the sensory bins, ball toss and musical instruments. And how about my students' broad smiles as they catch and pop the bubbles from the bubble machine. What a blessing!! Thanks to you! I will forever be indebted to you for your benevolence and kindness to my students!

I am continuously researching and planning lessons that incorporate sensory opportunities within the classroom as well as in the community. I want to continue to create sensory bins with different materials as well as different scents! How about a sensory bin with fresh lemon or mint extract??? The students will be in their element when they are given the opportunity to freely explore these materials in a safe environment!

    Thanks again for your support!”

  • Movement and Sensory Breaks

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

It is a pleasure to report to you the success of the project you enabled me to carry out with my class. When the boxes were delivered to my classroom, the students were cheering. Each day, another shipment arrived. When it came, the euphoria was palpable. They were so excited to watch the staff unpack the boxes with new movement and sensory items that they've never seen before. They all wanted to be the first one to try out the different items! And yes- they were given that awesome opportunity in the next few days!

For my students, sensory/movement breaks are vital to the success of their day. You have enabled them to succeed and thrive! The sensory/movement manipulatives in our classroom are now fully stocked, organized and labeled. They cater to my students' different needs. During class lessons, when the students need a break, they can choose from various opportunities. If only you could see my students' faces when they jump on the trampoline, relax on the plush beanbags or scoot around the classroom on the scooter. And how about my student's calm demeanor when he is given a massage with a massager or brush?? What a blessing!! Thanks to you! I will forever be indebted to you for your benevolence and kindness to my students!

I am continuously researching and planning lessons that incorporate sensory/movement opportunities within the classroom as well as in the community. I just took the students on a field trip to Kids N' Action; an indoor sensory room. Oh was it well worth it! The students enjoyed the trip immensely. Their smiles and glee in their eyes were priceless! They were able to run around, play in the ball pit, go on rides and slide down the patted slides in a safe environment! Pure bliss!

    Thanks again for your support!”

  • Sensory Integration

    Funded Nov 15, 2022

It is a pleasure to report to you the success of the project you enabled me to carry through with my class. When the boxes were delivered to my classroom, the students were cheering. Each day, another shipment arrived. When it came, the euphoria was palpable. They were so excited to watch the staff unpack the boxes with new sensory items that they've never seen before. They all wanted to be the first one to try out the different items! And yes- they were given that awesome opportunity in the next few days!

For my students, sensory breaks/sensory integration opportunities are vital to the success of their day. You have enabled them to succeed! The sensory station in our classroom is now fully stocked with various materials that cater to all their different needs. During class lessons, when the students need a sensory break, they are able to choose from various sensory opportunities. If only you can see my students' faces when they bounce on the ball chair, snuggle up in the sock bag or use the fidget toys. And how about my student's calm demeanor when he uses the weighted vest?? What a blessing!! Thanks to you! I will forever be indebted to you for your benevolence and kindness to my students!

I am continuously researching and planning lessons that incorporate sensory integration! For example, when we cooked pumpkin soup the other day, the students were given the opportunity to play with the seeds. They got dirty, but enjoyed it immensely! It was well worth it! I also just scheduled a trip to an indoor playground that caters to students with sensory needs. I can't wait to watch the students in action, in such a terrific environment.

    Thanks again for your support!”

  • Drinking Water Rocks!!

    Funded Mar 30, 2014

It is a pleasure to report to you the success of the project you enabled me to carry through with my class. When the water cooler and water bottles were delivered to my classroom, the students were cheering. They have been hearing about it and anticipating its delivery for months. When it came, the euphoria was palpable. They were so excited to watch the water cooler being installed. They all wanted to be the first one to use it! The water bottles were all decorated with each student's name. The students were so proud to have their very own water bottles.

Each morning, my students look forward to fill up their water bottles with water from the water cooler. They keep their water bottles with them and drink from it throughout the day. As my students tend to be overweight, I encourage them to exercise. My students participate in a Mighty Milers Program where they walk the track in the school yard and are rewarded for the amount of laps they do. They take their water bottles with them while walking the track. They drink with unmatched excitement that was not seen before. It certainly excites them more than the calorie laden soft drinks that are popularly enjoyed today by the masses.

As a result of this project being funded, my students are learning the importance of drinking water in order to stay healthy. They no longer need to bring drinks from home as they have their very own water bottles to use in school. I now have an easy time encouraging them to drink water as they have access to refreshing cool water all day! Thanks to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Miriam Alter

I am a special education teacher at an OTC school, namely a school that is an occupational training center for the special needs population it services. Our curriculum is geared to preparing the young adults entrusted in our care to become effective, functioning members of society. We do functional and vocational training on site and out of school as well. My classroom is comprised of 15 young adults with intellectual and developmental delays, such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, pervasive developmental disorder and the like. Even though they have limited abilities, they are fully cognizant of the things that occur in their sphere, and enjoy the day to day activities that their normal counterparts would. I gear my instruction towards functional skills that will assist them in their quest to become independent and to contribute to society in a significant way.
