We are a public school in the middle of a big city. We have a diverse school with students from many different countries as well as many different neighborhoods within the city. While we are located in a neighborhood that is considered to be a financially stable neighborhood, most of my students are not from that neighborhood. They come from low income families and from a neighborhood where they experience violence on a daily basis. They are trying to overcome the negative and become successful students. They love to learn. They thrive with a little bit of extra assistance and when their strengths are tapped into. Within my one classroom, we service students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, Autism, emotional disabilities, and other health impairments. We are a family and the kids stick together, stand up for each other, and protect each other. If one is having a bad day, the others will help them overcome it. It's a safe place for them to learn.
