Continuing the Story!
Funded Aug 22, 2018Hello!
Thank you so much for your generous donations. It's been a wonderful gift for our school to receive these books! As you know, one of the major things we work on with middle schoolers is building a love of reading and strong reading comprehension skills. The books you gave us have kids excited about reading and eagerly talking and sharing with one another. This is exactly the kind of reading community we want to have at our school and having these high-interest, mixed-level books has been incredibly helpful!
Earlier this year, our class read "The Crossover" by Kwame Alexander. Since finishing the book, students have been so excited to read others by this author. Because of your donations, we've had lots of copies of "Booked," "Rebound," and "The Playbook" for students to dive into! 6th graders who read the 'Track' series by Jason Reynolds last year have been so excited to read the final book in the series, 'Lu.' Thank you for making this happen!
Many of our students recently did some progress monitoring on their reading levels. Overwhelming, we've seen that students are at higher and higher reading levels, according to our assessments. This is certainly thanks in part to their increased interest in reading - and thus more time spent reading - because of the new books we have in our library.
Again, thank you so much!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Hamilton

Since getting these books, students have begun a regular reading response routine. Students read a minimum of 20 minutes in school and then more at home. Each week, they turn in a piece of writing where they reflect, through a different reading strategy, on their book. Over the past two months, we've seen student's writing and reading improve thanks to these books and the hard work they're doing with them.
