  • STEM Starters Need Materials

    Funded Feb 28, 2022

STEM starters kicked off our Soft Start Fridays with a bang! It is during this time when we put our Chromebooks down and engage in one-to-one or small group mind-challenging activities. Students engage in playing games and creating buildings and other objects together. Students love being able to build, create, and have fun with their peers. While it has taken some back as they cannot use this time to play online games, it has opened the doors to some different kinds of friendships and bonds that most enjoy. And the best part is when they want to get the teacher involved in their activities, from building to playing. I have played and taught others how to play checkers strategically. Participated in Apples to Apples with some of the most hilarious reasons as to why a word was chosen; and built forts with Lincoln Logs with my students cheering me on or working against me for fun! It is a great time and we thank you for all that have supported our STEM Starters!

We look forward to continuing to build our collections as the year goes on. I love introducing kiddos to old fashion games, with no technology required. It sparks conversation and some realize they have more in common than not. STEM Starters are designed to stimulate your brains and most of all build bonds.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hammond

  • Reading to Succeed

    Funded Feb 17, 2014

Thank you so much for donating to our project, Reading to Succeed. Your generous donations has allowed us to create a strong non-fiction library and prepare us for the PARCC assessments. We have used the books within our new library to explore some familiar and unfamiliar topics.

As a class we have learned about topics such as Earthquakes, Muscles within our body and Sharks from the great author, Seymour Simon. We have included information from our reading graphic novels about the Underground Railroad, Understanding Global Warming and The Curse of King Tut's Tomb within our research papers. In addition to reading, the graphic novels that were included within our new library they have also enticed my most reluctant readers, it has encouraged them to ask me for more! There is nothing greater, for a teacher, than a student who ask for additional reading!

Your donation has allowed us to move beyond our typical stories and have open the eyes of the 50+ students who funnel through my room for Language Arts and Science, allowing them to expand their writing to included information they have read about.

It is because of people and corporations like this that allow students to live beyond their neighborhoods and expand their background through the words of others.

Thank you so much for your kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hammond

  • Take A SEAT And READ!

    Funded Feb 14, 2014

Thank you for your amazing donation to help fund our project. The bean bags were a success within the classroom and my students really enjoyed them. With your donation, we were able to set up a small reading nook that was enjoyed by three 5th grade classes. My students were excited about taking turns just relaxing and reading a good book. This proved to be a great motivation for some of my 5th grade boys. Thank you for your time and consideration in funding our project and as always...reading is great now lets take a SEAT and READ!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hammond

Students need continued exposure to non fiction text, not only to spark their imagination but also to ignite the wonder. Answering questions like why are bats nocturnal? Or why are Glass Frogs endangered? Exposing my students to this rich text will draw them into another world, opening their minds and existence to non fiction, real world matter. However to make this connection, they need to read books on their reading level. A classroom library filled with non fiction text will not only give them exposure, it will prepare them for Common Core Standards! I teach in a Title I school where over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them have parents who are uninvolved in their education. No one is reading with them at home or listening to them read. But these kids WANT to learn. They love hearing stories being read aloud to them. I want to keep them engaged while they're under my care and foster a love of learning.
