  • Incomparable. I Am Me. Learning at My Own Pace

    Funded Mar 2, 2017

Due to your selfless giving to this project, my students have become more active and autonomous participants in the classroom. Prior to each of them having individually assigned dictionaries, about 3 or 4 students shared one dictionary and had to wait their turn. Now that we have one dictionary per student, students work at their own pace, feeling more in control of their learning. They are held responsible to care for a book which is numbered and assigned to each student, and take special care to avoid damage.

The other resources were even more appreciated. The personal white "boards" , erasers and markers were a definite hit with the students. They were eager to respond when given a task, because they felt safer among peers. Those students who normally would not want to speak in front of the class, quickly jotted down answers and raised their "boards" over their heads. Even group assignments flowed easily. The chaos of students shouting out responses was avoided and the class was very interactive without being disruptive.

Thank you for your generosity. My students are truly grateful and are better off because of the resources made available to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. B

  • Listen and You will Learn

    Funded Dec 19, 2014

Just wanted to let you know that your donation was a great blessing to my students and I. What may seem to be a trivial gesture to others, would have a lasting impact on many of my students.

When the students were told that the class had received a donation of headphones, they were all really excited. One of them even commented that a complete stranger would do such a thing was incredible. They were all amazed that people actually cared enough about their education that even though they were not known by the donors, they would be so moved to invest in their lives.

Once the headphones were received, my students could expect to use the equipment on a weekly basis to develop their listening skills. Prior to receiving this donation, not all students could afford headphones or were too embarrassed to bring in their personal listening equipment. I simply wanted the students to be comfortable in our classroom without fear of ridicule or inferiority. Affordable headphones of very good quality were chosen because I wanted the students to feel respected even though the charity of others provided the resources. On a chosen day of each week students were given weekly tasks to work on.

The listening activities enabled students to complete assignments in class at their own pace. More capable students who worked at a faster pace were able to move ahead without feeling held back. Students who required additional time to complete the assignments, were able to work without feeling inadequate.

This listening project had a great impact on the students' performance. There was improvement across the board. Students noticed that their ability to understand what they heard was increasing. With the opportunity to practice on a more regular basis, students grades increased. A pre-test was done prior to starting the project. Ongoing assessment was also being done during the project and the results have been amazing. Some students who previously had little success with the tasks, noticed an improvement and were even pleasantly surprised by it. Other students noticed that a couple of them were achieving more success as a result of the individualized assignments. These headphones made it possible to differentiate the lesson to cater to the students different learning styles.

Once again, on behalf of my students, your generosity was appreciated and noted.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. B

My students come from low-income homes, however, they are all willing to learn new things. As long as the resources are made available, my students will definitely use all the tools to help them develop the skills necessary to learn a foreign language. My school is a small school and having such an intimate setting, teachers are well aware of each student's circumstances. Even though some students may be able to bring in a pair of headphones, not all of them can afford to. To avoid the awkwardness for those who do not have resources, I think this is the best way to resolve this issue.
