The objective of this project is to provide start-up station activities in a space for students to independently explore, create, and problem-solve with materials of their choosing. The resources in this project will be used by students to apply STEM skills acquired in teacher lessons by giving them physical, hands-on manipulatives to explore and experiment with concepts such as simple machines, gravity, and magnets. The STEAM lab will introduce students to real-life scenarios and careers in STEAM fields, providing opportunities for students to explore these areas…an opportunity otherwise not available in many of these students’ lives. Students will employ creative problem-solving techniques while engaging in hands-on, self-directed activities. My goal is to create a truly student-centered environment to encourage and foster student creativity and curiosity. Each student on our campus will visit the STEAM Lab a minimum of 2.5 hours per month. While in the lab, mini lessons will be taught then students are able to select their materials to further explore a variety of topics introduced through the lesson. As the year progresses and students are more familiar with the engineering process, more advanced stations will be provided for those students who are ready. The need for these materials arises from transitioning an Art Class to a STEAM Lab for the 2020-21 school year. Basic STEM bins will be provided; however, this project would allow for additional resources catered to students interests and focus on developing 21st Century Learners to produce College and Career Ready individuals.
