My students come from a poor urban community and many of them live in the housing projects surrounding the school. However, our stellar, holistic education attracts students from wealthier parts of the city as well. I have a diverse classroom bursting at the seams with students, chickens, and other animals. All of my students benefit from our daily integrated approach including my students with special needs. The students are always busy with activities such as building animals out of cardboard boxes, painting wheat fields in the style of Winslow Homer and Van Gogh, drawing pastel farm landscapes at the National Historic site of Impressionist Julian Weir, using interpretive dance as we study bees and cross pollination, composing songs in Writer's Workshop, and writing commercials for our own First Grade Produce Market . My students are budding artists, scientist and global learners.
