My classroom printer has finally called it quits. It was 11 years old and I have been purchasing replacement cartridges for it out of my own pocket, but it has finally seen its last day.
We have 3 base printers in our school that the entire staff shares for a student body of about 350, but they are not near my classroom. Our district has an off-site print shop that we may use to request class copies, but this doesn't cover all our needs and the copies are not available that same day.
For language arts, students need to type, revise/edit, publish, and display their writing projects. When we had my classroom printer, students were able to receive immediate feedback, make revisions, reprint if necessary, and finally display their work. Losing my printer has slowed their learning and created an inefficient system.
In addition, we have very high restrictions for color copies on our school's only color printer (the other 2 school printers are black and white). My students participate in research and inquiry projects where printing a colored copy makes the material more meaningful.
Students also utilize technology tools such as Google Drawings and Google Docs to produce color-rich presentations and assignments to display their work. These only come to life when they are printed and better yet, printed in COLOR! For math, I differentiate student materials to meet the needs of all learners.
This means printing a reteach or extension activity, which is most effective when given immediately. Losing my printer has prevented this, as I can not leave my classroom unsupervised to walk across the school to the base printer.
Students deserve a tangible product to take home and be proud to display.
I am more than willing to pay for replacement cartridges for this printer.
