  • Ironing Out Our Pressing Needs

    Funded Mar 12, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation to my class. Because of your help, my students now have twice the irons and ironing boards that they had before. This greatly helps them with their sewing projects.

The Aida cloth has been used for two class projects. First, the students cross stitched their names with a small picture. Then they chose a larger picture to stitch as a sampler. Attached is an example of an amazing sampler completed by one of my students.

The class is currently working on sewing tote bags and pajama pants. Your donation has helped them with these projects and, because of the durability of the iron and ironing board, future classes will benefit as well. Thank you for your continued support of the electives at Pine Valley Middle School.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schluntz

  • We Are Sew Excited To Get Sewing!

    Funded Nov 27, 2023

My sincerest appreciation for your support of my class. It has been an adventure creating a sewing class from scratch and I truly could not have done it without the help and support from my generous donors.

As you can see from the photos, the fabric, shears, seam rippers and storage bins have been put to good use. I tagged the shears with ribbon to label them "fabric only" and have saved two for use when they are needed. The flannel fabric was used for our pajama pants project and the students appreciated having so many plaids to choose from. My students are learning to both love, and hate, seam rippers.

While I appreciated all of the items you donated to my class, I think the supply that has made the most positive change are the storage bins. Before the bins, the students kept their projects in plastic zipper bags that were piled on a shelf. The resulting slippery mess was a constant headache. Now, with these bins, each student has their own personal space to keep their projects that won't slip off the shelf or get shoved to the back of the cabinet. The organization adds calm and security to the classroom.

Thank you again for your support. My students and I are using the supplies daily.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schluntz

  • Sewing Machines Will Be Sew Much Fun!

    Funded Sep 6, 2023

Thank you all very much for your generous donation to my sewing class. The sewing machines I was able to purchase with your help have been busy since their arrival. My students have learned to name all the parts of a sewing machine, have practiced with paper practice sheets and are working on sewing their own two-fabric pillow cases. They are preparing themselves to tackle flannel pajama pants before the end of the month.

The five machines you gifted my class have been lovingly named: Bernadette, Bartholomew, Gertie, Rufus, and Gerald, by the class. The students sign up for shifts with their favorite machine and, like many who sew, talk to them, coaxing that bobbin thread to pop up or asking the machine to stitch in a straight line. Because of your help, my students are not only learning a useful life skill, they are having a lot of fun.

Thank you again for donating to my class and making the dream of bringing sewing back to my middle school a reality. I am hopeful that these five machines will be a starting point to a great elective choice at my school.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schluntz

  • Stitching Is Sew Fun For Middle Schoolers!

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

The books your donations have provided for my students have really enriched their experience. The embroidery books show step by step directions of stitches that I may not have time to teach them, allowing the students to individualize their creations and their education. The cross stitch books provide a variety of templates for creating cross stitch projects. This allows my students to work on images that they are personally interested in.

I am very appreciative of being a part of a community that respects creativity and art forms of all kinds. Your gift of these books will go a long way toward teaching life long skills and providing a new creative outlet for many students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schluntz

  • PVMS Yearbook Needs More Time!

    Funded Mar 26, 2014

Thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. The Mac mini will allow me to create 5th working station, which will make a huge difference to my Publications class. When I received the email letting me know that my project had been funded I was dumbfounded. It was like Christmas, but for my program instead of just for me. When I told the students they were amazed that other people not connected to our school would care enough to support their endeavors in class. I have a philanthropy component in my classes and the students were very excited to be recipients of the generosity of others. It gave them a taste of what their charities experience when we give to them. The act of becoming a recipient of someone else's donations helped bring the experience full circle.

My students are looking forward to using this new Mac Mini as a 5th computer station next year. District timing and requirements pushed off implementation of my station until this summer, but the students who will be returning are already talking about how much easier it will be. This year 28 students had to share 4 computers, meaning that often they only had 15 minutes in a class period to work before someone else needed a chance to get on. This meant that many students came in before and after school and during their lunches. This also affected other classes because I teach other subjects during their lunch periods. Your generous donation has helped students beyond my Publications class.

This project is going to allow me to raise the bar of expectations for student effort into their assignments for the class. Higher expectations make for greater outcomes. I also will be able to assign more practice spreads to give the students more of an opportunity to become more comfortable with the program we use to create the school yearbook. Students will continue to work on goal setting and time management, a major component of a project-based class like Publications, but with less stress and more opportunity for success.

Thank you again for your generosity and for supporting my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schluntz

My yearbook staff is very dedicated. They understand the important job they have in creating a yearbook for the school. We have only 4 computers for 28 students to do the work that needs to be done. The staff puts in numerous hours beyond our class time before and after school and during their lunches to make sure we meet our deadlines. They work very hard to try to have all 900+ students in the school represented in the yearbook.
