The children in my classroom come from many different backgrounds, cultures, races, and countries. As a teacher striving to support my culturally and linguistically diverse students, I want to be sure I am providing literature that reflects my students, tells their stories, and celebrates their histories. I want my students' cultures to be featured prominently in our classroom library.
My students should know that their stories, histories, cultures, and differences are all of value to our community. I wanted to prioritize Own Voices books- books written by authors whose lived experiences are reflected in the books. I also prioritized biographies, though there are a few fiction books, so that students would learn about real people who did extraordinary things. I wanted to be sure that my students' identities are represented positively, and in beautiful picture books.
These books will not only uplift students' identities, but they will also serve as wonderful resources when we are researching and studying change-makers and activists in the world and throughout history.
These amazing biographies and narratives will also help students develop critical thinking skills, as they examine the many perspectives and points of view on different historical events and time periods. Lastly, each of these books emphasizes community in one way or another, which is an essential component of my classroom.
These new books will be read, reread, read aloud, and loved. Students will remember their stories for years, will be inspired to achieve and create, and know that their classroom community values their identity and culture.
