Our school is in a small rural community. We have over 700 students in a school that was built in the 1980's to fit far fewer students. Most teachers have more students than they can comfortably fit into a classroom. Our school does have a few aides. However, since our school is an inclusive school, the aides are reserved for those students with extreme disabilities. Without a lot of aide support, we rely on our parent volunteers. We have a great group of parents who volunteer their time. Unfortunately, most parents aide in the lower grades and by the time we get students in the 5th grade, the parents are working outside of the home or have younger children. My students range in all levels of abilities. Some students require more of my attention than others. Because of this, those students who are early finishers are often left to work on their own. There is very little time for individual enrichment activities.
