Funded Jun 18, 2024First, I want to express my deep appreciation for the donations to my first project. Initially, I applied to get a Cricut machine. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the Cricut machine wasn't available. As a result, I was given the option of selecting different materials for art-based class projects. This has worked out quite well!
One skill I have acquired as a teacher is the ability to adapt quickly to change. I teach American Literature this year with a new curriculum that focuses heavily on American history and nonfiction. As part of our foundation unit, students read Anna Quindlen's essay, "A Quilt of a Country," in which Quindlen uses the simile "like the crazy quilts that have been one of its great folk-art forms, velvet and calico and checks and brocades. Out of many, one.." to describe the uncanny diversity of America. (Newsweek, 2001). A light bulb went off in my head! Why not have students create their own quilt squares?!
Using colored pencils, markers, wasabi tape, paint, and other art materials, students created a beautiful, eclectic paper "quilt." My students and I have had a great time designing and putting the quilt together. We are looking forward to doing more art integrated projects. Again, thank you for your incredible generosity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tittle
