"It takes a village to raise a child."
This project was designed to unite our school family by sharing a single piece of great literature with one another.
If funded, students, staff, parents and local community members will be given the opportunity to read the novel, WishTree, by Katherine Applegate. In this beautifully penned novel, a community has a time honored tradition of gathering around a centuries old tree each year on May 1 and sharing the wishes of their hearts. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the tree's fate becomes threatened. The community must come together to save it from destruction. This moving novel, delicately touches on themes such as friendship, acceptance, unity, loyalty, and respect. These are all core values that we teach and uphold in our school.
Our students and their families will have the privilege of enjoying this novel during the months of March and April through a variety of outlets. Much like in the story, on May 1, our community of readers will gather together on school grounds to discuss and share our takeaways from the novel in literature circles. At the close of the sharing time, students will each be given a scrap of fabric on which they can write a wish. Their wishes will then be tied to our own school "wishtree", where they will remain until the last day of classes. Our hope is that through this One Read, we will continue to grow our students as life long learners and ignite in them a passion for reading and a stronger sense of community.
The funds donated in support of this project will be used to purchase the books needed for this project in both English and Spanish.
