I teach sixth grade and over the course of this year, I've been fascinated to watch my students grow and mature from elementary students, to middle school students. They move at a quick pace and are eager to tackle any lesson involving the use of technology, or the integration of pop culture or sports. They surprise me on a regular basis with the way they think through problems and present solutions. They are a very creative bunch! The school I teach at is a magnet school that offers a large number of electives. In addition to core classes, students are offered up to three electives a day. The electives range from modern dance to engineering to fantasy football. This wide selection of electives allows every student to pursue a subject that they enjoy. Students may choose to focus exclusively in one area, or may try out a number of different electives to discover their new passion. This model creates a student body that celebrates each others' differences and successes.
